This gorgeous home in Naples, Florida, designed by the team at Finding Sanctuary by Lisa Kahn Designs, received First Place in the ASID Florida SouthDesign Excellence Awards 2022 — Residential Traditional Design Over 3000 sf Category.
With lots of natural light and beautiful flora and fauna surrounding the home, Lisa Kahn and her team created spaces filled with naturally-inspired luxury details.
Blending interior and exterior spaces
This spectacular estate sits abreast of a majestic lake that influences the entire spirit of this home. "There’s an island in that lake covered in mangroves where birds come and go with the rising and setting of the sun everyday. So we opened up the living room, creating a blur between the interior and exterior environments," explains Lisa Khan, the lead designer on this project.
Designed with doors along the length of the back of the home, spilling out onto sprawling outdoor spaces, Kahn notes that "the lake is invited to join the indoor rooms as a veritable member of the family."
"To push this further, we also echoed the greens and blues of the sky and lake beyond, while the floral patterns on the sofa cushions and the Chevron woodwork on the ceiling create a sense of flow that mimics that of the serene lake view," adds Kahn.
Inspired by nature
The natural world has always been an inspiration for Kahn and you can see that reflected in all of her interior design projects. "I believe connecting to nature in the built environment is the easiest way to engender wellness in the individuals who reside there," she explains.
The designer's selections for this project ranged from a soothing blue-green palette that reflects the lake and sky, to native Florida wood, specifically pecky cypress, which has pockets of darker wood shaped by fungi, creating a wonderful texture on the study ceiling.
"Our fabric selections from companies like Lee Jofa and Osborne & Little captured nature’s color palette and designs, as did the Philip Jeffries’ woven wallpapers and the Hickory Chair and Palecek furniture featured throughout," adds Kahn.
"I really love the whole outdoor area, especially the fireplace," says Kahn. "The curves were inspired by organic architectural shapes that the client fell in love with on a trip to Portugal. We also incorporated tabby - a mix of concrete and seashells - into the structure of the fireplace to give a nod to the coastal charm of the home," she adds.
